The Treasure Bands
The Treasure Bands is a generative work that shows the corruption and vulnerability of digital culture. The Treasure Bands addresses the fact that large multinationals invest significant sums of money in methods which enable them to become the only global internet service provider.
With his project, Van Leeuwen reveals the hidden world of the most valuable radio frequencies. Three vertical screens show in real time the competition for the most valuable frequencies with which the visitor’s smartphone is connected.
By using the personal frequencies of the visitors’ smartphones, the colored bands are never the same and keep moving all the time. In addition to the real-time work, also ‘recordings’ have been created throughout the Netherlands. These recordings show the invisible frequency landscape nationwide.
